A recent article in Science Daily outlined how Iowa State University worked with three manufacturing plants to study how a wellness program impacts the workers.
The study concluded that the largest problem among workers was a lack of flexibility. Next, the study found that 80 percent of the workers were obese.
After some training and monitoring, the employees at the three plants began to make some life changes that immediately impacted their life. The takeaways from employee surveys found that reducing stress in your life, exercising self-control over what and how much you put in your mouth when you eat. Finally, the study results were provided to the manufacturing management to consider options about the upcoming changes in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) also known as "Obamacare".
Expect to see more emphasis on wellness programs at the workplace. Projections are that insurance rates for companies and individuals will climb during implementation of ACA and companies will look for any method to reduce costs.
