Foods For Fall Fitness

Chillfit personal fitness means more than just stretching and lifting weights, it is much, much more!  I believe in making small changes that can help you reduce the intimidating burden of becoming your absolute fit self.
I am going to share some changes in your eating habits that can help you stay "Fall Fit."

The reason I am sharing this with you is that traditionally, the Fall season brings more colds and flus.  So, if you are sick, you tend to put off exercising.  Here are tips that I use for minimizing your risks of getting sick and thriving during the Fall season.

As a disclaimer, I am not a nutritionist.  If you have specific questions about the consumption of foods, supplements,  and other consumable products, please consult a nutritionist or physician.

1.  Eat More Fruit:  Specifically, Oranges.  Oranges have loads of Vitamin C which can help you battle colds and the flu.  Also, Oranges have fiber content.  Other helpful fruits are: Avocados.  Avocados have a very large amount of potassium and fiber, and are anti-inflammatory, which makes avocados easy on the digestive system.  Avocados are alkaline-forming, allowing the blood to return to a healthy level of acidity after a disturbance. Avocados are high in fat, so, use sparingly. Carbohydrates are the easiest source of energy for your body to assimilate, so focus on them for the period of your sickness.

2.  Ginger:  An anti-viral agent, ginger is good for more than just digestion or sea sickness.  It is a powerful, natural weapon in the fight against the Fall and Winter "Blahs."

3. Garlic:  This is an antibiotic and a stimulant for the immune system.  People who eat a lot of garlic have less colds and flus.

4.  Sweet Potato:  Easily digestible and full of vitamins and minerals.  Sweet Potato is good weapon if you feel a cold or flu coming on.  It will help you speed up recovery efforts.

5. White Rice:  Yes.  White Rice.  If you have an upset stomach, some fibers can irritate the digestive system.    I eat white rice if my stomach and digestive system is not quite what it should be.  Otherwise, continue eating wild rice.

6.  Chamomile Tea:  Black and Green teas contain mild toxins and irritants that can aggravate your body if you are starting to feel sick.  Chamomile tea is relaxing, anti-inflammatory, and anti-spasmatic.  Some recent studies have shown that Chamomile tea may even be anti-microbial.  Many people drink this type of tea to help them sleep.

7.  Melatonin:  Speaking of sleeping, rest is the most important part of staying fit during the Fall.  A good night's sleep helps your body repair and recover faster.  Melatonin has been shown to be an effective agent to help you fall and stay asleep.  Caution:  Always consult a physician for persistent sleep issues and before taking any herbal supplement.

Finally, if you can walk, you can still exercise.  It's never "all or nothing."  If you feel like a cold or flu is coming on, reduce your activity and just walk.  Walk a 3K or 5K distance to keep your body humming along.

Along with proper hydration, these foods, supplements, and habits can help you stay "Fall Fit."
