You should always hydrate your body, (I'll tell you why in a minute). However, what I see this time of year is that people are not adjusting their consumption of healthy fluids as the temperatures climb higher. I also see my clients not drinking enough fluid when it is less humid outside. If you have ever been to Las Vegas in the Summertime, you will know what I mean. In a less humid climate, your body loses more fluids through your skin. However, since the climate is arid, you won't notice the rapid depletion of fluids in your body.
It is around this time of year that I remind my clients to double down on their hydration due to the increase of outside temps...Especially if they consume over 2 cups of coffee a day, (coffee is a diuretic).
So, what are the benefits of hydration when you are on an exercise program?
1. Speedier recovery. When your body is properly hydrated, the toxins and wastes thrown off from your body will be eliminated quicker if your body is properly hydrated. Consumption of caffeinated beverages inhibit hydration.
2. Better blood flow. With more water in your body, your blood will find it easier to transport nutrients throughout your body to help you face your next exercise session.
3. Better Skin Condition. It's always amazing to me how much topical creams and lotions are purchased to help improve your skin. Heck, the best formula for your skin is H2O. Drink more and notice a healthier glow. Skin is important to your overall health and vitality. Don't underestimate the importance of good skin care during an exercise regimen.
So, there are a few good reasons to drink more water. Try to limit your consumption of those specialty waters. They are very expensive. Try adding sugar free, flavor drops to your water to improve taste and help you improve the amount of your water intake.
